Tropical Storm Idalia became Hurricane Idalia at 5 a.m. Tuesday, and is expected to grow to a Category 3 major hurricane with 120 mph maximum sustained winds before it makes landfall in the area of Cedar Key in the Big Bend portion of north Florida.

5 p.m. update: Watch to Warning — tropical storm conditions now EXPECTED

The Tropical Storm Watch issued for Osceola, Orange and Seminole counties Monday morning was upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning at 5 p.m., meaning those conditions — winds of 40 mph, are now EXPECTED sometime in the next 36 hours thanks to soon-to-be Hurricane Idalia.

Osceola County sandbag facility opens at noon Monday at OHP

In preparation for potential severe weather conditions due to Tropical Storm Idalia, Osceola County residents may fill and make sandbags at Osceola Heritage Park beginning at noon Monday. Enter the gated parking lot on Shakerag Road. It will be open from 12-7 p.m.
Osceola County is now under an inland Tropical Storm Watch issued by the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

IDALIA UPDATE: Osceola and Orange counties added to Tropical Storm Watch

At 5:30 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, adding them to the advisory that Polk County was included in on Sunday. A Watch means that those conditions -- winds of 40-75 mph -- are possible in the next 36 to 48 hours.

NHC UPDATE: TD 10 upgraded to Tropical Storm Idalia

At 11:15 a.m., the National Hurricane Center reported that observations from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicated Tropical Depression Ten has strengthened into Tropical Storm Idalia. The maximum winds are estimated to be 40 mph.
