It's been a historic weekend for Orlando soccer.
To start, on Saturday, the Orlando Pride made history by securing their first NWSL Championship with a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit in Kansas City. The decisive moment came in the 37th minute when star striker Barbra Banda found the bottom right corner with a left-footed strike, assisted by Angelina.
Despite relentless pressure from the Spirit, who created numerous chances through Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch, Orlando's defense held firm throughout the intense match. The Spirit came closest to equalizing when Hatch's header hit the post in the 45th minute, but the Pride's backline, combined with some crucial saves, managed to withstand a furious late assault that included some 10 minutes of added time to secure the historic victory and bring Orlando its first major professional sports championship.
This victory marked the first championship for Brazilian international Marta, while Coach of the Year Seb Hines led the Pride to their historic achievement.
The championship spirit was felt throughout Inter&Co Stadium on Sunday, when it was Orlando City's turn to play do-or-die in the MLS Eastern Conference semifinals against rival Atlanta United. And after about 112 minutes of high-level stellar soccer including the stoppage time, it was another 1-0 Orlando victory thanks to Ramiro Enrique's first-half strike.
The Argentine forward's 39th minute goal came when he alertly slid to kick the ball behind Atlanta United's top keeper Brad Guzman after an initial header attempt.
The Lions dominated the attacking statistics, registering 14 shots to Atlanta's 8, with four on target while keeping their Georgia rivals from testing goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. The Peruvian keeper earned another clean sheet without having to make a single save, highlighting the exceptional performance of Orlando's backline led by Robin Jansson, Rafael Santos, Dagur Thórhallsson and Rodrigo Schlegel. They kept Atlanta's attack under control throughout the match.
The game's defining moment came from a set-piece situation, with Enrique displaying his intense predatory pressure instincts to convert from close range following a corner kick and a header deflected from Robin Jansson. The goal rewarded Orlando's persistent pressure, with creative sparks Facundo Torres and Martín Ojeda consistently threatening Atlanta's defense with their precise crossing and clever movement.
Head coach Oscar Pareja's second-half management proved crucial, making several tactical substitutions to maintain control of the match. The introduction of Colombian striker Luis Muriel and Orlando City favorite Duncan McGuire in the 69th minute injected fresh energy into Orlando's attack. Veteran midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro and defensive stalwart Kyle Smith were brought on later to help secure the result.
The match maintained its characteristic intensity throughout, with the long-standing rivalry between these teams adding an extra edge to every challenge. The dynamics have shifted dramatically from the days when Atlanta dominated this fixture, with Orlando now asserting themselves as the dominant force in the Southeast.
At halftime Sunday, the women's NWSL shield was proudly presented to the sellout crowd by Haley Carter, while Coach of the Year Seb Hines addressed and energized the supporters. Could this be the year that both teams secure major trophies?
