School Board chair Terry Castillo will welcome a new board member next month, and await to see which other new board member wins another seat in November.
Castillo, the incumbent, defended her district 1 seat, earning 52.77% of the vote over Jennifer Arguello (28.68). James Nickles finished third.
"It feels really good to have the community in district 1 and say, 'We support Terry Castillo and we want to put students first,'" Castillo said. "We are proud and we are grateful with a capital 'G' and we are ready to work on behalf of the students of Osceola County."
In district 5, a race that was definitely going to be settled Tuesday, Erika Booth will take the seat of Robert Bass, who didn’t run for re-election. Booth (54.34%) defeated Debbie Mann (45.66) in a two-person race.
"I'm humbled by the community's support, it really took my breath away," Booth said. "I'm happy for our district and I'm excited for our students."
And in a race that will go to a runoff, Will “Coach” Fonseca (44.91%) and Heather Kohoun (30.78) will continue their campaigns into the Nov. 8 general election. Mindy Brewster finished third.
“I’m feeling good right now, it’s looking good that we’re going to November,” Fonseca said with about two-thirds of the Tuesday count in.
Kahoun said that as a first-time candidate, she was "humbled" by outpouring of support thus far during this process.
"I look forward to the runoff," she said. "I will continue to fight for student achievement, safer schools and better pay for teachers and staff."
