The Poinciana Eagles are going to have to wait until Monday night to try clinching at least a tie for the Class 6A-9 District title for the first time in school history.
The Eagles game at Haines City was postponed to Monday night due to rain and lightning in the area on Friday night. Poinciana will also play George Jenkins next Friday night. A sweep means a district championship and a second ever FHSAA playoff berth.
“Having to adapt is what comes with it,” Poinciana coach Taron Mallard said of having to play two district games in 5 days. “If we can win both games, we’ll really be champions."
With a win on Monday night, Poinciana (5-2, 3-0 6A-9) clinches at least a tie for the district title. George Jenkins (6-2, 3-1), beat Winter Haven 28-21 Friday after a 2-hour lightning delay.
The Eagles and Haines City (4-3, 3-0) have not yet lost in district play. If Haines City wins on Monday night, they are the district champions and get the playoff berth. However, if Poinciana wins, they would own the head-to-head matchup with the Hornets. If Poinciana then loses to George Jenkins, the MaxPreps rankings would decide who makes the state playoffs as the three teams would be tied with one loss. Currently, the ranking are Poinciana (58th in Class 6A), Haines City (60th), and George Jenkins (63rd). Winter Haven is 52nd but cannot win the district title.
