Osceola Health to host conversation series to improve HIV care

Osceola Community Health Services will host a conversation series over three days later this month to improve HIV care in Osceola County, the organization announced this week.

The Osceola Community Health Services Ryan White HIV/Prep Program manages care for HIV-related services for those who do not have sufficient health care coverage or financial resources. The conversation series will allow all residents in the county living with, impacted by or interested in learning more about HIV to voice concerns and ideas and ask our health experts questions about resources and treatment options available locally.

Dates, times and locations for the series are:

Thursday, May 23, 10-11:30 a.m. or 1:30-3 p.m., Osceola Community Health Services, 1703 Business Center Lane, Kissimmee, 34758;

Tuesday, May 28, 12:30-2 p.m. or 2:30-4 p.m., 109 N. Doverplum Ave., Poinciana, 34758;

Thursday, May 30, 10:30 a.m.-noon or 1:30-3 p.m., Osceola Health Services, 1877 Fortune Road, Kissimmee, 34744.

“HIV impacts families of all backgrounds,” said Osceola Community Health Services Chief Executive Officer Dr. Belinda Johnson-Cornett. “Our mission is to support people living with HIV by ensuring they are aware of their treatment options and addressing any barriers they may face when seeking quality health care and psycho-social needs. As we work towards a world free from HIV, we are committed to empowering and supporting those living with the virus. Our conversation series aims to create a nurturing environment where individuals can unite to shape a brighter future for all people.”

Participants will receive a $25 gift card and snacks, and should expect to complete a 10-minute written survey. The session will include a focus on individuals’ thoughts and experiences with living with HIV/AIDS and sharing ideas that can improve health in Osceola County. Virtual participation options are available by request. To join the conversation series, contact Michelle Dwyer at 407-747-9136 or Jason Briggs at 407-944-7195.

Support Florida police K9s with specialty plate

In honor of National Police Week, K9s United, a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting and advocating for police K9s, is encouraging Florida drivers to honor and support their local K9 crime fighters by pre-ordering its specialty license plate.

The license plate, once produced, will help the nonprofit support the selfless dogs who work hard to keep our communities safe.

K9s United only needs to pre-sell nearly 900 license plates to reach the required 3,000 pre-orders before the approaching Oct. 15 deadline to initiate their production. The specialty license plates can be pre-ordered by Florida residents with active state driver’s licenses for $33 from any authorized motor vehicle service center throughout the state, or from the K9s United website (www.k9sunited.org/florida-license-plate) for $34.

K9s United is an advocacy group for the welfare of working police dogs, Proceeds from the plate will further aid the heroic dogs who protect their communities on the front line, K9s United said.

Rate reduction for OUC, utility says

OUC’s Board of Commissioners has approved a 5% reduction in customer electric bills that will take effect July 1, the utility announced last week. The average residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours will see savings of $7 per month or $84 a year. Mid-to-large commercial customers will see a decrease between nearly 5% to 7%.

This will be third fuel rate decrease since June 2023 for OUC, which provides power for many residents in the St. Cloud area.
