With the 2022-2023 school year starting in just weeks, Main Street High School has started enrollment.

“We are an alternative high school that specializes in accelerated learning for students that have children, jobs that aren’t conducive for a public school student,” said Jennifer Rodriguez, Community and External Engagement Liaison of Main Street High School, aptly located on Main Street just south of Vine Street on the way in to downtown Kissimmee. “We hold each student accountable for their learning and focus on creating self-driven individuals that value their education for a greater future.”

The school features programs to help students achieve a diploma rather than a GED. Within the programs, Main Street High School offers a barber trades program that not only allows the student to gain a diploma but also to graduate with a barber’s license upon graduation.

Focusing on the students’ need to make a better future, Main Street High School has an average enrollment rate of 225.

Dwanye Stewart, Principal of Main Street High School, is passionate about social activism, mentoring, and helping young people.

“I am pro-choice, in regards to this style of education. The students that are predominantly in this school are normal, impacted by exclusionary discipline practices. They are in ISS or aren’t the strongest readers, or the strongest at math. They are in a constant situation of not being able to achieve goals,” Stewart said. “That is where we come in. It is a choice to come to Main Street High School now, it used to be a place where the kids ‘had’ to go, but now it is a choice, which enables them a better future.

“It is rewarding to see my students walk at graduation and not be a legal statistic just because someone didn’t want to help them.”

Providing a second chance program, Main Street High School helps create a plan for students to achieve their diploma. Whether they need extra assistance on their studies, or to catch up on their credits so that they can graduate on time, Main Street High School offers a plethora of services to meet the students’ needs.

“When these kids apply themselves, you will not find a more motivated, dynamic set of kids,” Stewart said. “I wake up most days before my alarm clock because I am thinking about the wellbeing of my students and what I can do to better serve them.”
