A 38-year-old Kissimmee man was killed this morning in a single-car accident when his car plunged into a retention pond at Pleasant Hill Road and Grenada Boulevard, Florida Highway Patrol is reporting.

The man was driving a 2017 Infinity northbound on Pleasant Hill at 2:45 this morning when, for what FHP's calling an unknown reason, the car left the roadway. The car struck a curb, traveled through a fence and into the pond. The car became completely submerged, and dive teams converged on the scene. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

Northbound through traffic was blocked on Pleasant Hill at Reeves Road for a time, and at least one lane of the road was closed much of the morning commute creating massive backups on both Pleasant Hill and Poinciana Boulevard. There were also major crashes on major arteries in Central Florida on State Road 408 approaching downtown Orlando and on southbound Florida's Turnpike south of Interstate 4 during the Thursday morning commute.

This crash remains under investigation, the FHP report said.
