For the first time since the 1980s, Kissimmee Airport is inviting the public into the airport for an open house event.

The event will take place on Saturday (Sept. 16) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the airport entrance at the south end of Dyer Boulevard. Admission is free but tickets should be obtained at https://bit.ly/44Jn7mP. Several aircraft will be on display, along with displays and exhibits and displays by several airport businesses and organizations such as the Air Force Junior ROTC and the Civil Air Patrol. There is a continuing strong demand for pilots, aircraft maintenance, and electronics technicians in the aviation industry, and Kissimmee Airport hosts several training schools that cover all areas.

The event is being co-hosted by the Latino Pilots Association, which is holding its Latin Aerospace Industry Expo at the Gaylord Palms this week from Sept. 14-16. The theme for this inaugural convention is “Sueños Unidos Hecho en Realidad—A Celebration of Latin Aviation.”

“This is the first major event for our association, which formed in 2015,” said Claudia Zapata-Cardone, president of the association and a pilot for United Airlines. “We are so happy to be able to include the local Kissimmee community in this event.”

The Latino Pilots Association is a national aviation organization with regional chapters and some individual city chapters as well. There are currently 3,000 members, with student memberships, scholarships, and mentoring programs available. Air traffic controllers, aircraft maintenance, and other aviation technicians are eligible for full membership.

“We have 100 exhibit spaces at the expo. Ninety-five were taken by vendors, and the remaining five we were happy to give to the non-profit aviation associations that have helped us along the way, such as Women in Aviation,” Zapata-Cardone said.
