Four Osceola County students have done something only 247 students have done worldwide – earn every point possible on the Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture Exam taken in May of the last school year.

Matias Edwards of Celebration High School, Emmanuel Romero of Osceola High, Renata Ceron Angelucci of Professional and Technical High School (PATHS) and Maria Rodriguez of Osceola County School for the Arts have earned the rare “perfect scores,” the School District of Osceola County has reported.

Edwards’ CHS Spanish teacher is Luisa Barrios-Cermonesi; Romero’s OHS teacher is Sophie Irizarry; Lizzette Milagros Marrero is the OCSA instructor and Vianela Ortiz at PATHS worked with Ceron Angelucci, a native Venezuelan who took the class last year as a freshman.

"When someone from the school came to me last week, I thought I was in trouble because I hadn't even thought of the test," said the well-spoken 15-year-old. "I was surprised because, I thought I did well, but I didn't know that would be an accomplishment. "The class wasn't that hard for me because of my Spanish fluency, but I will definitely mention it when I start applying to colleges."

The course focuses on practical communication in real-life situations, stressing vocabulary, language skills and cultural awareness. It also explores historical and contemporary culture to provide an appreciation for those cultural aspects.

"It was about presenting and being comfortable speaking about those subjects," Ceron Angelucci said. "There is an AP Spanish literature class, which I was going to take this year, but since I'm taking multiple AP classes I didn't want to be overwhelmed. There's no point of having these classes if you can't enjoy them."

“We are extremely proud of Matias, Emanuel, Renata, and Maria. To not only earn a top score of a 5 but to earn every possible point on the AP Exam is an amazing accomplishment,” said Dr. Mark Shanoff, Superintendent of the Osceola School District. “This honor is not only a credit to the students but also to their teachers at Celebration High, Osceola High, PATHS, and Osceola County School for the Arts for preparing them for such success.”

Students who earn passing scores on AP exams have the chance to save a significant amount of time and money by earning college credits and consideration in the college admission process.

“AP courses and exams are college-level, requiring great focus and persistence among participating students,” said Trevor Packer, head of the Advanced Placement Program. “We applaud the educators who encourage students to challenge themselves, who motivate and encourage diverse students to achieve their academic potential.”

· Matias Edwards - Celebration High School

· Emanuel Romero - Osceola High School

· Renata Ceron Angelucci - Professional and Technical High School (PATHS)

· Maria Rodriguez - Osceola County School for the Arts
