Friday, 5 p.m.: Three people were hurt when a small plane crashed on the east side of Lake Tohopekaliga around 3:15 p.m. Friday, Osceola County Fire Rescue and the Osceola County Sheriff's Office has reported.
The Sheriff's Office responded to the crash site in a wooded area off Tohopekaliga Drive. That's off the western end of Kissimmee Park Road, near the eastern shore of Lake Toho. The plane is in a wooded area behind a neighborhood that is now very marshy thanks to all the recent rain. The plane was resting in about two feet of water, Osceola County Fire Rescue EMS spokesperson Andrew Sullivan said.
"It was very difficult for crews to get to it," Sullivan said. "We had to take chainsaws to get back to it. The area is enclosed by barbed wire, so neighbors in the area were very helpful letting us through their property to get to the crash site."
Three passengers were inside the single-engine plane and were taken to a local hospital: a woman in serious condition and an adult male and minor male in fair condition, Fire Rescue officials said. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The plane deployed a parachute system used to decelerate in the case of a crash or hard landing.
It is not clear yet if the plane was attempt to take off or land at Kissimmee Gateway Airport, or at another site. The Federal Aviation Authority and the National Transportation Safety Bureau (the FAA and NTSB) have been notified and will investigate the crash, officials said.
