A nice cold glass of water on a hot summer’s day is always a treat. Drinking water, which is water that is safe to drink, is essential to a thriving community. Whether it is for cooking, cleaning, drinking or hygiene practices, we use water every day. A quality water supply and well-managed water resources can improve health, contribute to a community’s economic growth and reduce poverty.

Drinking Water Week
This year, Drinking Water Week is observed May 7-13. This celebration recognizes the importance of water and water infrastructure. For over 40 years, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and its members have celebrated Drinking Water Week – a unique opportunity for both water professionals and the communities they serve to recognize the vital role water plays in our daily lives.
Toho Water Authority’s Board of Supervisors officially adopted a proclamation for Drinking Water Week. Toho is observing Drinking Water Week by: recognizing the valuable role this natural resource plays in everyday life, the infrastructure required to deliver it to homes and businesses and the vital work that professionals in the water sector accomplish daily to ensure the delivery of safe, quality tap water.

Our Tap Water
Underneath Osceola County is one of the largest reservoirs of fresh groundwater in the country, the Floridan Aquifer. The aquifer is replenished with rainwater that is naturally filtered through hundreds of feet of sand and rock. Water from this aquifer is consistently high quality and used as the source of drinking water for the Toho Water Authority water system. Because of its high quality, the water needs little to no treatment other than aeration to remove hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor) and chlorination for disinfection.
Quality Assurance
Before any water leaves Toho’s water plants, it is monitored to verify that it meets all of the state and federal drinking water standards. After the water goes out into the community, lab testing continues daily throughout our service area for quality assurance.

Water Is Good For You
One of our favorite ways to celebrate Drinking Water Week is to drink water! The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine determined that a daily fluid intake of about 15.5 cups for men and about 11.5 cups for women is needed. Water increases energy and relieves fatigue, keeps muscles healthy, boosts the immune system and so much more.
This year, to celebrate Drinking Water Week we encourage everyone to head to downtown Kissimmee on Friday, May 12 for the Value Water Event! This event celebrates the importance of water in our everyday pleasures, such as coffee. Toho will provide free coffee to visitors who stop by local coffee shop Buchito in downtown Kissimmee from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 12. Additionally, Toho will attend the Safety First PediaAquatics Drowning Awareness 5K Run/Walk Event at the St. Cloud Lakefront on Saturday, May 13 where we will have a hydration station and offer an opportunity to meet and greet the Toho mascot, Hydro.
Toho Water Authority works diligently every day to provide our community with the best water quality possible that meets all drinking water standards.
