2020: A year to remember and forget in high school sports

The calendar turned on us last week and 2020 is gone (thankfully in some people’s mind), so it is time to look back on a high school sports year that was (and wasn’t) for the last 12 months. The 2020 calendar year got off fine, as basketball, soccer, weight lifting and wrestling entered the second halves of their respective seasons, with some outstanding teams and individuals excelling in their respective sports.

Kowboy wrestlers excel at knockout Christmas classic

Osceola freshman Anderson Heap won his weight class and defending state champions Cooper Haase and Jaekus Hines registered runner-up finishes as the Kowboys recorded an 11th place finish at the prestigious Knockout Christmas Classic held at Silver Spurs Arena, Dec. 28-29.

Osceola district soccer, basketball, wrestling are in full swing

Although the coronavirus continues to frustrate local high school coaches and athletes, winter sports are in full swing at Osceola County high schools as we approach the New Year. Wrestling, boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys and girls soccer are all being contested, with several holiday tournaments taking place.

Bryant to FIU, Castillo to Vanderbilt

Gateway’s Jakovi Bryant, who missed half of his senior season with a shoulder injury, inked a letter-of-intent to play football for Florida International University. Bryant, who played running back, wide receiver, defensive back and special teams for the Panthers is projected to be a defensive back in the FIU system for Head Coach Butch Davis.
