GUEST EDITORIAL — Building inclusive communities

A decent place to live removes the barriers to opportunity, success and health that have affected families for years, if not generations. At Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County, we believe fair housing is a necessity that should be equal and accessible to all.

Our homeownership program provides safe, affordable housing options for individuals and families while promoting inclusive and discrimination-free communities. By making homeownership attainable for those who might not otherwise have the means, we open doors to new opportunities and greater financial stability.

Our homeowner education courses are an essential part of this effort, providing Central Floridians with financial literacy and the knowledge needed to navigate the homebuying process, and maintain and preserve their affordable homes. Additionally, we provide access to resources including housing counseling and mentorship that are critical to better understanding their financial situations and what steps are needed to improve their income and credit scores and achieve homeownership.

However, we recognize that our work is not enough to achieve fair housing for all. To create lasting change, we must address systemic issues such as poverty and economic and racial inequalities. This requires cooperation across all sectors and the development of policies that ensure equitable access to housing.
