Two dead in head-on State Road 60 collision

Two people are dead after the Florida Highway Patrol says their vehicles struck head on just west of U.S. Highway 441 on State Road 60 late Wednesday night.

According to the crash report, a Honda CR-V driven by a 54-year-old Tampa man was headed eastbound on 60 just east of Mae Bass Road, when it entered the westbound lane attempting to pass slower traffic. The vehicle entered the path of a westbound Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by a 52-year-old Greenacres City man. The two collided, and troopers say the drivers were pronounced dead on scene.

The crash, near the site of other deadly accidents on the two-lane road, remains under investigation, FHP says. The Florida Department of Transportation is studying the widening of 60 through the area. Currently, an estimated 14,300 vehicles per day use the road, with 34% of that traffic consisting of trucks. By 2050, the traffic is expected to increase by 140%. In the four-year period of 2020-2024, there were 334 vehicle crashes, including nine fatal incidents.
