With a focus on closing academic achievement gaps among students, particularly those that have been exacerbated during the pandemic, the Osceola School District is launching a comprehensive plan for providing struggling students with additional instructional support and acceleration.
It would include before and after-school tutoring, as well as Saturday and summer camp programs. Each school in the district has developed opportunities beyond the school day to support both digital and face-to-face students who are not experiencing academic success.
"We are laser focused on the academic success of each and every student," said Osceola School District Superintendent Debra Pace. "I hope that students and parents take advantage of the academic support intervention opportunities offered at their school so that no child struggles with learning. Our goal is to ensure our students make a year and a half worth of academic growth this school year as we overcome academic setbacks, known as the COVID slide."
The opportunities for additional academic support at each school are for any VPK - Grade 12 student who:
- earned a D or F letter grade (or unsatisfactory in kindergarten and first grade) in one or more subject areas for the first semester; and/or
- is not performing at grade level.
- is not on track to achieve a minimum of one year of academic growth.
- digital students who have not demonstrated engagement in all instructional tasks/assessments on learning platforms (i.e. Canvas and/or TEAMS) at least 90 percent of the time.
- digital students transitioning back to face-to-face learning.
Parents are encouraged to visit https://www.osceolaschools.net/AcademicSupport to view their school's additional instructional time offerings, such as before and after school tutoring and Saturday academies, and to contact their school counselor or classroom teacher to discuss options that would specifically benefit their student. Transportation will be provided for eligible students, and programs will offer healthy snacks and other incentives for participation. COVID health and safety precautions will be followed, including wearing of masks by all students and adults as well as social distancing.
