On Wednesday, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' (ACIP) endorsed the safety of the Pfizer vaccine and its use in 12 to 15year-old adolescents.
This is the first COVID-19 vaccine in the United States authorized for use in younger teens and adolescents; the vaccine had previously been authorized for people age 16 and older. COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson are authorized for use in people age 18 and older.
Effective immediately, the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County will begin providing the Pfizer vaccine to those 12 years of age and older at its main vaccination site located at Centro Cristiano Dios De Pactos Church in Kissimmee. Appointments for first dose vaccinations at this site are available Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and on Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and can be made by visiting http://myvaccine.fl.gov.Individuals younger than18 must provide a completed consent form and have a parent or legal guardian present at the time of the vaccination.
Although fewer children have been infected with COVID-19 compared to adults, children can be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and spread it to others. The CDC recommends vaccinations for everyone 12 years of age and older to help protect against COVID-19. Widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help stop the pandemic.
