Government offices in the cities of Kissimmee and St. Cloud and Osceola County, including libraries and the Osceola County Courthouse will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Business and customer service centers at utilities like KUA and Toho Water Authority will also be closed.
All curbside trash and recycling collection services will operate on the normal schedule Tuesday. Residents are reminded to have their waste containers ready for collection as usual. The Bass Road Resource Recycle Center will be closed on Tuesday.
Offices closed Tuesday will reopen and resume regular hours and operations on Wednesday.
The day is meant to show appreciation for the service, sacrifice, and commitment of all U.S. military veterans who have defended the country and its values. The United States celebrates Veterans Day every Nov. 11 to honor and thank all military veterans — everyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, whether during war or peacetime.
The holiday began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. Fighting officially stopped on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when the armistice with Germany took effect. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to recognize and honor veterans of all wars.
It’s important to note that Veterans Day, which honors all who served, is different from Memorial Day, which honors those who died while serving.
