Gateway sprint swimmer Jenny Valido will swim today at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart as Osceola County’s lone Class 4A state meet qualifier after breaking a school and county record.

Valido was sixth at last week’s Region 4A-2 meet in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.68 seconds, breaking the marks she set the week prior at the district meet. Valido was also 16th in the 100 breaststroke at regionals.

The medley relay team Jenny and Karen Valido, Valeria Olarte and Melissa Salas finished 15th and also set a new school record.

“I am very happy with the girls’ performance,” GHS swim coach Vonnie Kochensparger said. “The nicest thing about it is that there is only one senior on each of the relays and everyone else should be back next year.”

LONGHORNS 14TH AT STATE GOLF: The Harmony boys golf team finished 14th at the Class 3A state golf championships last weekend at Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, led by senior Kevin Carr (85-78—163), who tied for 51st.

Evan Taylor (85-79—164), Carson Sampl (86-89—175) and Conlan Micher (82-98—180) rounded out Harmony’s team score of 338-344—682.

There was intrigue at the top of the leaderboard, where Gulf Coast (615), Ocala Forest (616), Winter Park (617) at St. Thomas Aquinas (622) finished within seven shots of each other.
