Toy Story takeover: Toy Story Land to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Toy Story is taking over Disney’s Hollywood Studios with the opening of Toy Story Land on June 30. Guests will shrink to the size of a toy, as they wander around the land that is designed to resemble Andy’s backyard— full of everyone’s favorite toys, building blocks, game pieces, and a whole lot of fun.

The highly anticipated addition to the theme park will cover 11 acres of Hollywood Studios, offering new attractions, eats, entertainment, character encounters and special merchandise.

Let’s take a closer look…

Attractions

First up, the Alien Swirling Saucers. Guests will swirl and whirl in rocket ship toys with a claw hanging overhead, designed as a playset Andy won at the Pizza Planet restaurant. From the sound of it, this ride may somewhat resemble the favored teacup ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom. Or even a ground-level Dumbo. But we’re not entirely sure.

However, it is safe to say that Slinky Dog is the star of Toy Story Land’s attractions. You may have already seen him peeking over the bushes from World Drive. His ride, Slinky Dog Dash, is a family-style coaster. Wheezy, the squeaky toy penguin from the Toy Story films, will make his big appearance in the last scene of the Slinky Dog Dash. He’ll sing the films’ biggest hit “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” accompanied by his friends, Mike the tape recorder and Mr. Spell, also from the films.

Toy Story Mania, which is already a favorite in the park, will remain open.

Eats

Woody’s Lunch Box is bringing classic favorites to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with a modern twist. Indulge in the S’more French Toast breakfast sandwich, grilled three-cheese sandwich, BBQ brisket melt, Totchos or lunch box tarts.

“Everyone has a special food memory, so it can be tricky putting a modern spin on the favorites,” Lenny DeGeorge, Concept Development Culinary Director for Walt Disney World, stated in a press release. “We honored these classic dishes by using the best ingredients to elevate the flavors. How we constructed the sandwiches was important, such as layering the ingredients in a specific order, to maximize textures and flavors. Why have a cold sandwich when you can have a toasted, hot, gooey, cheese-filled one?”

Entertainment

Sarge and the Green Army Drum Corps will march through Toy Story Land. While we can guess it might be similar to the Storm Troopers’ Imperial March, we can also assume it may be a little less intimidating. The Green Army Men will “toy” with guests, as they lead them to an interactive boot camp. Potential recruits can test their abilities with Pixar balls and oversized crayons, and even during a game of “Sarge Says”— a spin on the common game, “Simon Says.”

Character Encounters

In Toy Story Land, you get to actually hang out with the toys. How awesome is that? After boot camp with Sarge, you can meet Buzz Lightyear, Sheriff Woody and Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl.

Merchandise

Announced earlier this month, new merchandise will be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Guests can leave their Mickey and Minnie Mouse Ears headbands at home and purchase three-eyed alien and Slinky Dog headbands, exclusive to Toy Story Land. Exclusive merchandise will also include T-shirts, other clothing, accessories and more.

Admission to Toy Story Land is included with general Hollywood Studios theme park admission. For more information on Toy Story Land, visit DisneyWorld.Disney.Go.com and search “Toy Story Land.”

Also coming to Walt Disney World, H2O Glow Nights at Typhoon Lagoon. Guests can continue the Toy Story fun, and hang out with some of their favorite Toy Story characters like Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie. Even Rex will be there, hosting family-friendly activities throughout the party.

Along with shorter wait times and less crowds, guests can experience DJ-hosted dance parties, limited-time food, a special adult-only area and more.

H2O Glow Nights at Typhoon Lagoon will run from June 21 to August 11, on select nights. This is a special event; admission is not included with an annual pass. Tickets are $55 plus tax for guests ages 10 and up, and $50 plus tax for children ages 3-9.
