About the Weeki Wachee Mermaids

The Weeki Wachee mermaids have been wowing audiences for more than 70 years with their underwater performances. In 1946, Newton Perry scouted the beautiful springs of Weeki Wachee as the perfect place to start his new business. A retired member of the U.S. Navy, Perry had trained Navy Frogmen how to swim underwater in World War II. After building an underwater theatre at the Springs, Perry recruited beautiful women and taught them how to breathe underwater using an air hose and perform underwater ballet. They hosted their first show on October 13, 1947 and helped Weeki Wachee Springs State Park receive worldwide acclaim as one of the nation’s top tourist attractions in the 1950’s.
