This week’s lunch stop was at a new (at least for Kissimmee) sandwich place called Meson Sandwiches.

There is actually an El in there somewhere, but it can’t be found in the signage of this casual dining spot, which also happens to be one of the most popular Puerto Rican restaurant chains.

This is the second location in the Orlando area.

Meson Sandwiches got its start in 1972, when Puerto Rican native Felipe Perez opened a small diner to serve his home-style sandwiches. The tradition now continues in Kissimmee.

Meson features a nice variety of sandwiches, time and budget only allowed for one,  the Caribbean Style Pork (with seasoned pork and Swiss cheese and other ingredients). It is served up on the restaurant’s own pressed bread, and the lunch bunch all gave their sandwiches (not all pork) a pretty big thumbs up.

The pork sandwich is $5.79 and you can add on a few more dollars for a fries and drink combo.

Other sandwich selections include Chicken Rotisserie; Virginia Ham, Medianoche (a pork, Virginia Ham, pickles, mayonnaise, margarine combination); Tuna Salad and Turkey.

Slightly more expensive are the specialty and premium sandwiches and there are about 20  to choose from including Argentino, Roast Beef, Corned Beef, Cubano, Minnesota Feast, Meson Special, Delicioso, Turkey & Roast Beef, BBQ Cheddar,  White House, Philly’s and Boricua Steak. Throw in two veggie varieties and that’s a menu of nearly 30 different sandwiches.

In addition to the sandwich  menu, there are two different salads and baked potatoes as well as soups and sides.

The restaurant also serves breakfast at anytime (omelettes, more sandwiches), pastries and snacks.

They restaurant also boasts about its Caribbean-style coffee, and the coffee menu alone has about 15 variations including espresso (several types), cappuccino and more.

The restaurant also has a drive through if you want to take that Caribbean experience home with you.

The Kissimmee location is at 1010 W. Osceola Parkway and is open daily, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The other area location is at Florida Mall.
