Cirque goes ‘Crystal’ for new acrobatic ice show

Going to shows and events might be “part of the job,” but I have to say, I really enjoy it. Getting to experience something first-hand, after writing several stories leading up to it, is a really fun reward.

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a showing of Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever ice show: “Crystal.” This traveling show is taking stadiums across the nation, with Orlando as one of its first stops.

“Crystal” explores the artistic limits of ice for the very first time in Cirque’s 34-year history, as the company’s 42nd original production. The family-friendly show blends skating and acrobatics with synchronized skating, freestyle figure skating, extreme skating, swinging trapeze, aerial traps and hand-to-hand acrobatics.

Using all of these elements, the show’s lead character, Crystal, invites you into a world of her own imagination and self-discovery.

There are many breathtaking scenes throughout the production — every scene is outstanding, honestly — and I would hate to spoil any of them for those of you who might still have the chance to see the show. But I will say, the hockey scene (just before intermission) was one of my favorites. The hockey players brought a ton of energy and adrenaline to the ice, speed skating back and forth, and up and over ramps. Another favorite was the half-ice-half-acrobatic performance with two characters to Beyoncé’s song, “Halo,” as Cirque du Soleil incorporated modern pop music — and even live music —  into the show.

The night ran about two hours in length, including a 20-minute intermission. Some of the performers even entertained the audience before the show started.

Though Orlando was one of the first stops during this tour, it will continue through cities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Ohio and Canada.
