St. Cloud Parks and Recreation announces January city activities

The City of St. Cloud Parks and Recreation staff is coordinating the following events for January 2014:
• Garden Class – The Urban Agricultural Program is hosting three Composting and Soil Care classes Jan. 18, from 9:30-11:30 a.m.; and Jan. 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at PegHorn Nature Park and Trail. The class is for people 14 years and up, preregistration at the Civic Center is requested, and the cost is $8 per person/per class.
• Banquet Hall Open House – A marina building banquet hall open house event is set for Jan. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. During the open houses, visitors can see for themselves why the banquet hall is the best place to host special occasions, including wedding receptions, birthday celebrations, and business meetings. The Marina Building Banquet Hall is located at 1104 Lakeshore Blvd., second floor.
• Movie at the Lakefront – Jan. 10, sunset. The movie is “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” (rated PG) at Lakefront Park. A family movie is shown every month on a giant inflatable movie screen. This year-round monthly program is free to the community.
• Don’t Curb It… S.W.A.P. It! – This event is scheduled for Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Peghorn Nature Park and Trail. Residents are invited to bring their live Christmas trees (sans decorations) and swap them for a new potted tree for their yards.
• Touch a Truck – This event is for children 10 years old and younger. It is set for Jan. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Civic Center. Various City of St. Cloud trucks will be on display and children will be able to learn about them and the crews who drive them. Everyone will also enjoy hot dogs, games, and prizes. The cost is $3 per child.
• Get in the Dirt with Wirt – This Urban Agricultural Program event will allow for children ages 7-11 years old to build terrariums. The class is set for Jan. 11, from 1-3 p.m., at Peghorn Nature Park and Trail. Cost is $5 per child. Pre-registration at the Civic Center is encouraged.
• Day Camp – School is out and fun is in Jan. 17, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Civic Center. Camp is for children 5 years old (kindergarten completed) to 14 years old. The day camp fee is $20 per child for Osceola County residents and $25 for nonresidents of Osceola County.
• Kids Night Out – The first Kids Night Out of the New Year is set for Jan. 18, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the Civic Center. It’s a Pajama Party evening and cost is $10 per child (dinner and dessert included). The Kids Night Out program offers supervised care and fun activities for children ages 7 to 11 while parents enjoy an evening to themselves.
• Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service – The memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be honored Jan. 20 with volunteering and park improvement projects. This event will take place at Hopkins Park from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s “Make It A Day On, Not a Day Off” in St. Cloud. U.S. Congress designated the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday in 1994 as a national day of service.
• Air-Potato Mega Raid – Everyone is invited to an Air-Potato Mega Raid Jan. 25, from  9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Peghorn Nature Park and Trail. The air-potato (Dioscorea bulbifera) is an invasive plant. Volunteers are asked to bring their own gardening or working gloves. This event is free and for all ages.
• Night with The Magic – Orlando Magic vs. Milwaukee Bucks game tickets for Jan. 31 selling at the Civic Center. A bus leaves the Civic Center at 5 p.m. This trip is for all ages; $38 per person. Children ages 12 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets must be purchased by Jan. 24.
