Spring Cleaning For Your Finances

Ah, Spring Cleaning! You know how it works: once a year you massively overhaul your house, garden, yard, and so on, but spring cleaning doesn’t just apply to your house. It’s also a healthy exercise to review your financial position from time to time so that you can be sure your behaviors are in line with your short and long term objectives. This can be accomplished by creating or examining your current budget for your finances.
If you’ve never created a budget for your personal finances, the first step in your financial spring cleaning needs to be just that. Budgeting is the most effective way to take control of your spending and saving. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives and not take the time to pause and make sure we’re spending and saving our money wisely.

There are all kinds of tools for budgeting to fit your personality. Form a spreadsheet, use online tools, or even pencil in your numbers in a notebook every month. The method doesn’t matter; the budget itself does. Creating a budget in writing will give you something tangible to remind you of your goals and help to keep you on track.
If you’re familiar with budgeting, spring cleaning for you might be reassessing your current budget.  Ask yourself if there are areas of spending that you could cut. What would you rather spend more on? The point is to reassess your priorities and make sure your budget lines up to those priorities. Then, consider having someone look it over with you. This could be someone close to you, like a spouse or friend, or a financial advisor who can give you a better idea of what’s realistic in your budget and potentially point out any hidden consequences that you don’t see.

Hopefully, creating or reviewing your budget this spring will be a platform for improving your finances. If nothing else, taking time to do it will give you a temporary excuse from doing yard work!
