HHS Trey Hayes

Harmony linebacker Trey Hayes brings down a Satellite ball carrier in Friday's 24-14 win over Satellite. The Longhorns finished the regular season on a nine-game winning streak.

Harmony will, for the first time since 2007, host a regional playoff football game next week against an opponent to be determined on Sunday when the brackets are announced.

Coach Don Simon said he’s at ease with finding out on Sunday.

“I got coaches, receivers, linemen trying to do the math. I gave up on it weeks ago,” he said of the playoff points.

Soon. It will happen soon.

After Friday’s 24-14 win over Satellite Friday, the next snaps the Longhorns take will be in a do-or-die game. That win tied these Longhorns with the 2015 team that also went 9-1 for best regular-season record — but lost its playoff game.

“We’re trying to be the best team in school history,” Simon said.

The 2007 team, the last HHS district champion, also won two playoff games and ended up 10-3. But Simon said Harmony will have to show more than Friday to make a deep playoff run.

“We got a 17-0 lead at the half then just went to cruise control, and we just can’t do that,” he said. “So I hope our kids learned something.”

Harmony scored on its first two drives, on a 15-yard Garrett Simon catch from Nate Herstich and a 24-yard Reece Allison field goal, and added to the lead when Herstich ran in from the 4 with four minutes left in the half.

Up 17-7, the Longhorns stretched the lead when Herstich found Elijah Fernandez from 15 yards out to essentially put away their ninth consecutive win.

With a bye Friday, Simon said practice this week would be focused — on the Longhorns for a change.

“We’ve got to get back to basis in a lot of spots — technique, blocking, tackling, catching, things you may not get to do when playing ten games straight because you’re gameplanning for an opponent,” he said.

Harmony is No. 4 in the Region 2 points standings with their slate completed. Likely playoff opponents would be Winter Haven, Kathleen — or a rematch with Lake Nona in Harmony.
