The Saturday Sitdown

Yes, they may have the best defense in the NFL. Yes, they lead the NFL in wins with 10. Yes, they are the defending NFL Champions. And Yes, I would think twice against betting against them. That said, I can’t help but notice that Tom Brady looks old right now. And he has no offensive weapons around him. And Baltimore has the most dynamic player in the game today and unlike Kansas City a year before them, they have a great defense of their own. If the AFC Championship Game was played next week, I think we would finally see a changing of the guard…

True Story.  I was playing golf at Royal St. Cloud, when I observed a cart about three holes ahead of us, working his way backward and, stopping at every group before moving on. But after each stop, I noticed the driver was weaving all over the place like he was searching for something. It’s the type of behavior you see when someone either left a club somewhere or lost a GPS.  So imagine my surprise when they got to our group and the driver said with a straight face, “Any of you guys find a Golf Shoe?  NIKE, Size 10 ½?” Who loses a golf shoe during a round? And even if you somehow managed to do so, do you really need to use the size qualifier? Being snarky, I wanted to say, “NIKE 10 ½?,  No I only found a FOOTJOY, size 8”…

The lack of news out of Tallahassee leads me to believe that Bob Stoops is absolutely out of the running (his choice) to become head coach at Florida State. I also believe that a new coach will be named sometime during the next 12 days, that he will be a current head coach of a college team, and he will assume his duties before his current team plays in a bowl…of course this prediction is based on the idea that Florida will hammer Florida State today. If FSU wins, all bets are off and the Noles may go the WVU route from a decade ago when the Mountaineers elevated Bill Stewart to permanent head coach after he upset Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.  Should FSU find a way to upset Florida, there will be strong sentiment to give the job to Interim Head Coach Odell Haggins….

Speaking of the Noles, the Tampa Times reported this week that according to FSU officials, Willie Taggert never had a signed contract. A later report dismissed that story, stating that Taggert did sign the contract, but no official from FSU signed it. Either way, it sounds like Florida State may be angling for a way to get out of paying Taggert the full $18 million the buyout requires….

Is Turkey becoming “Turkdon’t”?  A recent study of 2000 families said turkey was starting to lose favor as America’s choice for a Thanksgiving Dinner. In fact, the study said 44 percent of families  will serve something other than turkey as the main dish.  Of those 44 percent, ham, chicken and rib roast were listed as the most popular replacements for the noble turkey…

Things I learned when looking up other things today….Joe Paterno (24), Bobby Bowden (22), Bear Bryant (15), Nick Saban (14) and Mack Brown (13) are one through five on the all-time career bowl win list for head coaches.

In honor of the ninth anniversary of the great Leslie Neilsen’s passing this past Thursday, a Lt. Frank Drebin quote from the movie Police Squad… “The truth hurts doesn’t it Hapsburg?  Oh sure, maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts”…

Where for art thou, Dewayne? The former Ohio State star led the Redskins on a late drive after an interception, and Washington proceeded to kick a field goal with about 20 seconds remaining to take a 19-16 lead over the Lions. Detroit’s quarterback Jeff Driscoll then threw an interception with eight seconds to go, forcing the Redskins offense back on the field for one final snap. But Haskins, who played the entire game at quarterback, was nowhere to be found – forcing the Redskins to use backup Case Keenum to take the final snap. Haskins apparently thought the game was over, and video later emerged showing him celebrating with the fans and taking selfies with them when Redskins coaches were searching for him to finish up the game…

At 20-years-old, the Mavericks Luka Doncic (30.6 points per game, 10.1 rebounds per game, and 9.8 assists per game) may not only be the best young player in the NBA but might be the best player period…

Comments by Jerry Jones after the loss to New England this week certainly make him sound like an owner getting ready to fire his head coach. The fact that he feels the need to handle it in such a manner suggests how much he truly cares for Jason Garrett and how personally hard would be for him to send Garrett packing. Counting his years as a player, Garrett has spent 20 years in the Cowboys organization – all with Jones as the owner.  When you listen to Jones speak about Garrett, you can tell he genuinely likes him and considers him family.

Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving Holiday and as always, Y’all Have a Great Week!
