If you weren’t at Toho Marina on Jan. 14, you missed out!
The Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail held a tournament out of Lake Toho and the team of John Brazzell and Josh Davis set a new record for the heaviest bag in the series.
Thirteen teams launched from the Marina that morning and the duo of Brazzell and Davis headed to Lake Kissimmee. Several mini fronts had pushed through creating the opportunity of a lifetime for these guys.
According to Brazzell, the bass wanted to spawn but the cooler water temps pushed them out to the shell bars where this team hammered them, catching their first large mouth around 8:30 a.m. throwing Carolina Rigs.
The rest of their time until weigh-in couldn’t have gotten any better. Josh caught the biggest of the limit, a 9.98-pound giant, that would also become the big fish of the day. He followed that up with a 7-pounder on his very next cast.
I can only imagine the adrenaline rush happening to these anglers. John finished out their limit with three more 6-plus pounders. Their 36.12-pound limit was the organization’s tournament record.
This marked the seventh win for John and Josh in the series since 2010. There finished second in the 2015 national championship where they won a Skeeter TZX190 for their efforts. John and Josh have been team fishing together for about 15 years and have an estimated 80-plus tournaments together.
John fished this tournament just before competing in the Bass Masters Southern Open on the Harris Chain last weekend. He finished 45th there.
… Speaking of the Southern Open, I would like to recognize an angler who fished his first Open. Jerrod Albright of Kissimmee ended his two-day journey in 16th place, just a few positions shy of qualifying to fish for the championship Saturday. Albright fished as a non-boater and had a two-day, six-fish limit of 14.15 pounds, enough to take home a check to fund his hobby!
Both Jerrod Albright and John Brazzell are preparing for the next Southern Open on Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tenn., in April.
… West Lake Toho news: Water levels are high on Toho and water is flowing out of the south end of Lake Kissimmee.
There is an ABA Ram Open Series tournament out of Lake Toho today. Catch the weigh-in at 3 p.m.
We are in for cooler weather this weekend. If you are out boating, practice your boating safety and remember your boat ramp etiquette!
Tight lines, friends.
