For those of you who don’t know me personally, I would like to share a little fact with you . Besides submitting my Reel Deal column weekly, I am employed full time. Last week after fishing in the ICAST Cup, my employer of 25 years, Gary Suhl, passed away. I will forever be grateful that he gave me the day off to fish because I don’t know of many bosses that would, but will always have some regret that I wasn’t at the office. He was such a generous man and always supported me when it came to “My fishing thing”. I will miss him dearly but know that he will always be apart of what my future holds. On Monday evening there was a beautiful rainbow over Lake Toho, I know that was you Boss Man…Until we meet again.
Last week was ICAST here in Central Florida. I hope you were able to attend the weigh-in at the end of the ICAST Cup down at the Kissimmee Lakefront. I had the pleasure and privilege to fish with last years Forest Wood Cup (FLW) Champion John Cox from Debary, Florida and Bob McKamey from Mud Hole Tackle in Oviedo, Florida. John is a really down to earth guy! We only had four hours on Lake Toho in his aluminum Crestliner Boat and did the best we could trying to find a 5 fish limit to bring to the scales, but it just wasn’t our day.
The field was made up of 69 boats that included tackle representatives, professional anglers and members of the media like myself. The 2017 winners was the team of Richard Patterson, Dave Smith ( from U.S.A. Bassin) and Glen Cabezas (from AnglerGear.net) with 20.7 pounds and the largest sac in the 3 year history of the ICAST Cup. The big fish of the tournament was caught by Jeff Weakley who was representing Florida Sportsman Magazine. Although he didn’t get any prize for his 7.2 pound bass, he certainly got some recognition and an exciting story to take home! As for my team and me, all I’m going to say is at least we didn’t zero out!! Can’t wait until next year!
Toho Wednesday Night Shootout: The winners from Wednesday July 5 were Shelton and Steven with 16.34 pounds. Second Place went to the duo of Mark and Charlie with 13.81 and rounding out Third was Skip and Mark with their 10.70 pound 5 fish limit.
Wednesday July 12 results: First Place Shelton and Steve again with 24.35 pounds. In Second was Eric and Pete with 22.98 pounds and last but not least in Third was the team of Charlie and Matt with 19.31 pounds. Nice weights for fishing the day after the ICAST Cup!!
I hope everyone has a great weekend. Maybe get out there and take a kid fishing or someone who has never been before! Tight Lines friends.
