Harmony WR Aiden Poe

Harmony's Aiden Poe wrap up Liberty's Will Valach en route to winning the 106-pound class at the District 2A-6 championship. He and 10 other Longhorn teammates qualified for the Region 2 meet this weekend in Brandon.

Osceola and Harmony claimed district wrestling titles last weekend, and are poised for big showings at this weekend’s regional meets.

For the Kowboys, it was another District 3A-5 title, but Celebration (164 points) pushed Osceola (197) as they both qualified 10 wrestlers on to this weekend’s regionals.

The top four in each weight class at the district tournament advanced to the 3A-2 regional meet Friday and Saturday at OHS. The Kowboys look to start another streak after Palm Harbor University ended their three-year run in 2018.

Wrestling will start at 11:30 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, and the finals and third-place matches will begin around 4 p.m. Saturday. The top four at the regional move on to the state tournament at Heritage Park March 8-9.

St. Cloud (103) and Gateway (102) followed behind in the team standings, qualifying five and six wrestlers for regionals respectively. Tohopekaliga (57) was seventh in its first district tournament; Michael Hidalgo (145 pound weight class) and Richard Gernandizo (195) were third to move on for the Tigers.

Osceola boasted six district champions: George Duncan (113), Jaekus Hines (120), Zayveon Mitchell (132), Malyke Hines (138), Adriel Martinez (145) and Nolin Eaddy (160). Chase Fuller (152), Dylan Ruiz (220) and Cody Carter (285) were runners-up and Oscar Maldonado (106) took third.

“It’s an important week of practice,” OHS Coach Jim Bird said Monday. “Big days to get game plans ready and get in situations that will win the big matches.”

Celebration’s four district champs were Kyler Peraza (106 pounds), Ke’Shawn Peterson (126), Will Huyke (160) and Alfonso Serrano (182). Jacob DeMarino took second at 132 and 3rd: Yan Paul Zayas (113) and Jeremiah Cirino (120), David Milville (138) and Erik Gonzalez (285) were third.

Wilfredon Martinez won at 152 for the Bulldogs, and Sophia Anderson (106), Maverick Hauser (120), Justin McGinley (126) and Valdemar Guerra (182) were runners-up.

Gateway claimed two titles with Jared Colon (195) and Kyjuan Allen, who defended his 285-pound title. Mike Baez (170) was second and Justin Chamorro (152), Robert Martinez (182) and Tim Usilton (220) were third.

In the District 2A-6 meet at Harmony, the Longhorns tallied 255 points and dominated; Poinciana (111) was an impressive but distant second. Eleven Longhorns will go on to the regional meet at Brandon on Saturday, including eight district champions: Aiden Poe (106 pounds), Dylan Jones (126), Melvin Ewen (132), Josh Hall (138), Sean Serry (152), Marshall Smith (160), Avery Hamm (182, his third district title), Juan Gomez (195).

Alvaro Morzan (120), Pasquale Distefano (145) and Will Jacobson (170) were runners-up, and Kade Toner (113) won a consolation match for third.

Poinciana sends eight wrestlers to the regional, including district runners-up Levi Lewis (113), Marvin Trigueros (152), Brendan Ortega (220) and Quaylen Hill (285). Andrew Neville (138) won a consolation match for third.

Liberty’s Will Valach (106), Jonathan Garcia Torres (132) and Manuel Rentas (138) were district runners-up and are part of the four-person Chargers group going to regionals.
