Poinciana library to host eclipse event

Get into the spirit of the 2017 solar eclipse by attending the Poinciana Branch Library’s Eclipse 101 with Professor McConville on Thursday, Aug. 17 from 4 to 5 p.m. Learn from this Seminole State Professor everything you wanted to know about an eclipse. Bring the family and pick up your eclipse glasses.

Come back to the Library on Monday, Aug. 21, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for the Eclipse Viewing Party. The Great American Eclipse of 2017 marks the first time since 1917 a total solar eclipse will be visible in certain areas across the United States. Enjoy games and activities in the library and then grab your eclipse glasses and head outside for the best view of the year.

There are several other events being held at the library this month. Local author Patti O. Flaherty will be reading from her collection of children’s books featuring Trisha Turtle on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 2 p.m. Don’t miss out on the craft following the reading.

The next Physician Lecture Series topic will be managing blood pressure and hypertension. Dr. Nauman Zaffan, credentialed internal medicine doctor at Poinciana Medical Center, will provide healthy lifestyle tips to help manage hypertension and blood pressure. Zaffan will also discuss treatment options and explain risk factors. This presentation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The Poinciana Branch Library is located at 101 N. Doverplum Ave. All library programs are free and open to the public.

Happy Birthday Poinciana Medical Center! Poinciana Medical Center will celebrate its fourth birthday on Thursday, Aug. 24. Celebrate and visit the hospital’s first floor, Poinciana Room, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., enjoy a slice of birthday cake and meet the new CEO, Chris Cosby.

The next PRFSC meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at New Dimensions High School’s auditorium, 4900 Old Pleasant Hill Road. This meeting will be held in a community roundtable format. Guest speakers will be state Rep. John Cortes and Sen. Victor Torres.

Just add water and—Shake! APV Aqua Zumba will have a trial session on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mary Jane Arrington Gym and Aquatic Center, 50 Country Club Drive. Join Poinciana Zumba Instructor Poinciana Z Fitnezz for this new addition to the community’s fitness regimen. There is no charge for this session.

Come watch the big fight on the big screen. The Association of Poinciana Villages will hold a viewing party for the Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor boxing match Saturday, Aug. 26, at 7:30 p.m.  The fight will be shown on the big screen at the “new” Community Center, 445 Marigold Ave. The charge to attend is $10. Space is limited.  Must be 21 and up. To register, go to the Association of Poinciana Villages Facebook page and follow “Viewing Party.”

The Florida Department of Health in Osceola County will no longer be providing primary care medical and dental services to residents of Osceola County. Primary Care Medical Services of Poinciana, (PCMSP) will assume management of the Health Department’s primary care and dental services effective Sept. 1.  PCMSP will continue to provide you with medical, dental and optometry services with the same providers and at the same clinic locations where you have been served in the past.

If you do not want to continue your care through PCMSP or have a copy of your record transferred to PCMSP, let the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County know by calling 407-343-2034 by Aug. 31.
