Honor, and thank, our veterans.
That's the message behind Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, observed by the federal government to honor military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
The original remembrance coincided with major hostilities of World War I, which were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (Nov. 11) of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
Veterans Day honors the service of all military veterans, while Memorial Day in May specifically commemorates the sacrifice of those who died while in military service.
As it's a federal holiday, government offices, post offices, banks and utility offices will be closed Monday. Two minutes of silence is recommended to be observed at 2:11 p.m.
