For the first time in two decades, Polk County has eliminated curbside recycling.  Because of global market issues, the process has gotten too expensive, officials. Two other green initiatives are under way at a planned landfill property privately built by Opal Fuel, The first will convert gas into fuel that can be sold to power vehicles like garbage trucks.  The second initiative involves leachate – which is dirty water that seeps down and collects at the bottom of the landfill.  The process turns the leaches into water that is clean enough to seep its way back into the aquifer. For more information, contact the Polk County Solid Waste and Recycling at 863-284-4319.
