Man shoots, kills Poinciana man on Christmas

A Mount Dora resident was arrested on Christmas for murder after shooting and killing a Poinciana man.

Arrested was 24-year-old Johnathan Velasquez.

According to an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies responded to a Montclair Way home in response to a Poinciana shooting report.

Velasquez was at the scene and was taken to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He told investigators that he was in the backyard and had heard arguing coming from a neighbor’s home. Fearing the argument would escalate, Velasquez said he went upstairs and retrieved his gun. He then returned to the backyard and witnessed a female neighbor slap Robert Gray, 38, and then went inside the home.

Witnessing that, Velasquez said he went to the neighbor’s home and made contact with Gray. Velasquez said once Gray got within 10 feet of him, he shot the man, causing him to fall to the ground immediately, the report stated.

Gray was taken to Poinciana Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Velasquez was then charged with murder and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
