Female passenger killed in Florida’s Turnpike crash

An Orlando woman was killed in an Osceola County crash on Florida’s Turnpike on Friday

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Gerson Giotto, 45, of Orlando, was driving a 2015 SUV southbound on the turnpike at about 5:52 a.m., behind a 1999 semi-truck. For an unknown reason, Giotto failed to slow down as he approached the rear of the truck and slammed into the back of it. The impact killed Leah Giotto, 41, who was a passenger in the SUV. A second passenger, Liode Giotto, 71, of Orlando, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Gerson was listed in serious condition. The report did not list the relationship of the three people in the SUV.

The driver of the semi-truck, Carlos Acevedo, 62, of Tampa, was not injured.

Charges are pending against Gerson. The crash remains under investigation.
