Clermont man killed when deputy's patrol car slams into truck

A Clermont man was killed on Friday after an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s patrol car slammed into the back of his truck.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Deputy Gloria Boccio, 29, was driving the car, a 2018 Dodge Charger, eastbound on U.S. Highway 192, near Lindfields Boulevard, at about 8:15 a.m. Three other vehicles were stopped ahead in the center lane for the red light at Lindfields Boulevard.

For an unknown reason, Boccio failed to stop her vehicle, and she slammed into the back of a 2013 Ford pickup truck driven by Robert Johnston, 34, of Clermont. A domino effect occurred, with the truck hitting a Dodge van in front of it, which hit the back of a 2012 Ford Focus.

Johnston was taken to Osceola County Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.  The driver of the van and the Focus were not injured.

Boccio suffered minor injuries. She has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an FHP investigation and an internal affairs investigation, according to media reports.
