Arrest made in Celebration ATM skimming cases

Osceola County Sheriff’s detectives made an arrest early Sunday morning in a string of bank fraud cases in Celebration.

Alexandru Tomescu, 19, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and fraud by use of a scanning device after he was identified as a person of interest in the investigation into who attached skimming devices to two SunTrust ATMs.

The devices were reported last week at branches at 650 Celebration Ave. and a drive-thru ATM at 74 Blake Blvd.

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to Fun Spot at 2850 Florida Plaza in Kissimmee and spoke with an employee who told them he recognized a suspect involved in incidents at the SunTrust banks after seeing his photo on recent news reports, Sheriff’s spokesperson Twis Lizasuain said.

Deputies made contact with the individual who showed them identification listing his name as Tomescu, but deputies were unable to verify his true identity and he was subsequently booked into the Osceola County Jail, where he remained as of Monday afternoon, as a John Doe with no bond.

Detectives are working with local, state and federal agencies in the skimming matter. The investigation is on-going with additional charges pending.
