Cold front may slow bass fishing PDF Print E-mail

Some big bass have navigated back into shallow water, looking to spawn. That’s the good news. The bad news is that about the time you read this, another cold front will have moved in and probably pushed them back out.
I’ve caught several bass over 8 pounds and four over 9 this past week.   A couple of my regular customers fished Monday and had a spectacular day. They put 14 bass in the boat and two of them were over 8 pounds.  Another two of them were over 9 pounds.  They were all caught on wild shiners back in pretty shallow water.  Some really nice bass are being caught up on the Butler Chain.  Guides Skip Campbell and Jay Turner have made several trips up there and have done well.  An average day in that area would be around 15 bass up to 7 pounds.
Specs continue to bite south of Brown’s Point.  Limit catches have been reported.  Most of them are being caught not too far off the Kissimmee grass on jigs and minnows.  Bluegills are starting to spawn and can be found in reeds and around shell beds.  Crickets and worms should both work well.
Most of the alligator mats that had been visible along the lakefront are now gone.  Harvesters went in and removed them over the past month or two.
I was beginning to think I would never see that sight again. About the only thing visible now are patches of Kissimmee grass and a few scattered pads.
In my opinion, a great job was done to clean up that part of the lake and it has opened up a big area for bass fishing.
