For 20 first- and second-grade girls, practicing their ballet positions once a week after school is only the start of their dancing career.

A Kissimmee Fire Department lieutenant driving a motorcycle was killed in a crash on Osceola Parkway Thursday, after a St. Cloud woman in an SUV failed to stop for a red light and hit him, witnesses said.

Lt. William Manning, a 12-year department employee, was pronounced dead at Celebration Health after the occurred at about 7:50 a.m.

Now, the Kissimmee Fire Department family is mourning the loss of one of their dedicated employees.

“This is a very tragic day for the Kissimmee Fire Department and the Manning family,” said Acting Fire Chief Jeremy Donovan. “Lieutenant Manning’s pride and ownership in the fire service was second to none.  His dedication to the department and the safety of the citizens of Kissimmee will greatly be missed.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.”

To help give children in need a great start on their first day of school, Kissimmee Utility Authority has partnered with A Gift for Teaching of Osceola County to launch Operation Backpack.

For many children, the start of a new school year is filled with anxiety and academic challenges, according to a KUA press release.

Have you seen the low-growing plant along John Young Parkway in Kissimmee with the pretty yellow flowers?  It’s called perennial peanut, Arachis glabrata, and is a great groundcover for landscapes in central Florida. It is often found being used as an alternative to turf or as a low growing groundcover in a garden bed.
