Webber University assistant track and cross country coach David Andrews got a good scouting report on City of Life Academy runner Deion Cossio: his own.
Andrews, the former Osceola High track coach, watched Cossio compete against the Kowboys last season. Plus, Andrews is a member of the City of Life Church congregation, so he had all the inside information he needed to offer Cossio a cross country grant.
Cossio signed the letter of intent at the school office recently with his mother, Carmen Cossio; brother, Ivan Cossio; school cross country coach Dave Warren and guidance counselor Maria Anthony in attendance. Cossio’s father, Ivan Sr., was unable to attend.
“He ran very well against us (at Osceola) last season; in fact, he was running so well that I wished we had him,” Andrews said. “He’s only been running for one year, so that makes what he’s done more impressive.”
Cossio’s best time was 17:03 last season. He led the Disney Classic last fall before being overtaken in the last quarter of a mile and finishing third.
“It was a couple of brothers from Tennessee,” Coach Warren said. “All the way through the race until then, they’d announce, ‘Cossio, from City of Life, in the lead.’ That was neat.”
Cossio also played basketball and baseball at the school.
“He’s always been interested in athletics,” his mother said. “Baseball, basketball, everything.”
Cossio said he enjoys cross country competition.
“I like it, it’s fun,” he said. “I probably like baseball a little more, but it’s good.”
Andrews said Cossio will learn a lot at the Babson Park campus.
“We have a real good group of guys coming in, plus he’ll have the benefit of working with (Warriors Head) Coach (Peter) Ormsby, who has a lot of experience in working with marathoners. He’s taken several of our runners to the national meet,” Andrews said.
Andrews said that Cossio has the potential to drop his time by a full minute in 5K races this season.
“He’s a great runner with a lot of potential,” Andrews said. “We have three different tracks for our runners. We let them work their way up as their ability increases. The great thing about cross country is that the top seven score at the meet, but everyone has an opportunity to get into that top seven.”
Cossio said he will major in hospitality management.
