Poinciana Coach Cory Fleming looks for a better effort from his team Friday when the Eagles visit Lake Region at 7 p.m.
The Eagles, seeking their first district win since 2009, played lackluster last week and fell at Tavares, 27-7, in a 5A District 7 game.
Fleming chalked it up to a lack of preparation.
“We didn’t get in a good practice all week because of the lightning, we just watched a lot of film,” he said. “These kids need reps. It was probably our worst game all year. I could see it coming.”
Poinciana (1-3) trailed 17-0 in the third quarter when quarterback Javonte Hursey scooped up a bad snap and went 30 yards up the middle for a touchdown.
“We had to finally go under center to get good snaps,” Fleming said. “Our kids ran pretty well, we just kept missing key blocks. I thought the defense played fairly well.”
Junior Theron “Duke” Ellis had a big game, tallying 10 tackles on defense and carrying 10 times for 80 yards.
“He came to play with a nasty disposition,” Fleming said.
Dariusz Bladek, likely the Eagles’ best two-way lineman, separated a shoulder in the first half and missed time. He returned but only played offense.
He will be available when Poinciana goes to Lake Region, 3-1. The Thunder have won three straight after a 24-14 win over George Jenkins last week.
“They’ve got a super quarterback (L.T. Thompson) who makes all of their plays, just like the Tenoroc quarterback,” Fleming said.
The Eagles return to Eagle field next week against 5A-7 district favorite Bishop Moore.
Life Christian will have to wait another week for its first victory. The Lions, who are on their bye week, scored first against Merritt Island Christian, but lost, 35-8.
Linebacker Andre Waterhouse had 16 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Leo Nunez, the Lions’ second-leading tackler, broke a hand and will be out for a month.
The Lions return to action on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Archie Gordon Park against Jacksonville Mandarin Christian.
City of Life Academy resumes its six-man football schedule Friday at 7:30 p.m., hosting Halifax Christian.
