Harmony’s bad-weather season continued last week when Friday’s game against Liberty was moved to Saturday because of lightning.
The good news was, it didn’t rain during the game Saturday afternoon, but the bad news was: Liberty 50, Harmony 20.
The Longhorns, 1-3, host Bishop Moore for homecoming Friday at 7:30 p.m.
It was the third time this season that a Harmony game has been delayed or shortened because of rain.
“We’re probably more used to (weather delays) than any high school team in the state,” Coach Jerrad Butler said.
The Longhorns fell behind, 14-0, in the first quarter before quarterback Sterling Hicks hit Tony Ellis for a 7-yard TD pass, capping a 65-yard drive, to make it 14-7 early in the second period.
But, the Chargers took advantage of a short field to score again, and a 75-yard pass play with 1:02 left in the half made it 26-7.
“The first part of the game was played on our end of the field. We just couldn’t get any field position,” Butler said.
Harmony scored twice in the second half on TDs by Michael Santiago and Forrest Osborne.
Butler said playing in the midday heat was a challenge, “but everyone played under the same conditions.”
The game was the 7A-6 district opener for both teams, and the Longhorns now are in a must-win situation for their four remaining district games.
“Liberty has multiple guys who can go all the way anytime. They’ve got a good team,” Butler said. “I thought for the most part we did a pretty good job of containing their No. 3 (Jalen Benn), who is very good. They got a couple of big plays off us in the first half, but I wasn’t that unhappy with the way we were playing. The kids were playing hard.”
Butler said the point of the season has arrived where the Longhorns can’t make excuses about being young or inexperienced.
“We’re five games (counting the Kickoff Classic) in now. I understand we’re still a work in progress, and we have inexperience at some positions, but I would hate to see us using that as an excuse,” he said.
Unfortunately, the Horns may have lost several players for Friday’s game.
Tristan Reeves (ankle), Nathan Reyes (concussion), Preston Jones (knee) and Alex Britton (knee) all suffered injuries against Liberty.
Bishop Moore, 3-1, has one of the area’s top running backs in Tyler Floyd and an accurate quarterback in Danny May.
“Bishop Moore is the kind of a program that you want to model your program after,” Butler said. “The Floyd kid has really grown up and is a big, strong back now who gets a lot of yards. It’s going to be a challenge for us.”
