After a week off, Liberty resumes its football season Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Bishop Moore in a non-district contest.

The Chargers’ goal Friday: win the game. Not on the list: Giving away cheap touchdowns after turnovers.

“Man for man, I don’t think they match up well with us,” Chargers Coach David Benson said. “They are a typical Bishop Moore team: disciplined, and football smart. They aren’t the most athletic team we’ll see, but they make up for that with a high football I.Q.”

The Chargers, 0-1, surrendered a pair of touchdowns off turnovers in the fourth quarter against Haines City two weeks ago, blowing a one touchdown lead.

“We can’t continue to make those mistakes; if we do, then they’ll beat us,” Benson said. “We spent last week working mostly on fundamental things and ball security.”

When the Chargers hang on to the ball, they have perhaps the most explosive offense in Osceola County. Sophomore quarterback Terrell Bonds threw for a school record 331 yards and three touchdowns against Haines City.

Ameer Thompson had eight receptions for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the season opener, and running back Jalen Benn had 156 combined rushing and passing yards and scored two touchdowns. Demetrious Taylor averaged 18.7 yards on four receptions.

Linebacker Mylam Peters had 13 tackles against Haines City.

Bishop Moore, 1-1, has one of Central Florida’s top running backs in senior Tyler Floyd, who was limited to under 60 yards rushing during a 41-21 loss at Osceola last week. Quarterback Danny May, a junior, threw for 167 yards and a touchdown.

Liberty opens its 7A-6 district schedule Sept. 23 at Harmony.
