The Florida Division of Forestry announced today it has been in an ongoing battle with wildfires throughout the Orlando District, since mid-May.

Currently there are 37 active wildfires in the Orlando District, which encompasses Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. Thirteen of the 37 active wildfires occurred on Tuesday, June 14, within a three-hour timeframe.

“This is a clear indication of how dry it is out there with severe drought conditions, very little rainfall, low humidity levels and an accumulation of high winds and low humidity levels, along with 'freeze-dried' vegetation left behind from the harsh winter we encountered,” agency officials stated in a press release.

The Florida Division of Forestry has 100 percent containment of all 37 wildfires at this time. The majority of the fires were started by lighting, with the exception of seven wildfires. The largest of the wildfires is the Whispering Pines fire, which has consumed 3,605 acres; it is east Orange County. The second largest of the wildfires is the Seven Angels fire, which has consumed 1,338 acres and is in Merritt Island.

The Florida Division of Forestry is asking everyone to be on alert at all times for wildfires, especially with the severe thunderstorms in the region.
