The Osceola District Boy Scouts on April 1 along with community and business leaders honored Murray Overstreet with its 2011 Golden Eagle Award for service to the community.

The Golden Eagle banquet at which the award was presented was at the Omni Resort at ChampionsGate and was emceed by Jo Thacker, Overstreet’s daughter and the 2010 Golden Eagle honoree.

Overstreet, a life-long resident of Osceola County and a retired attorney, was involved in the development of the Osceola County School for the Arts and he helped bring Valencia Community College to the county, among other community accomplishments.

Overstreet also spent decades serving the United Methodist Church of Kissimmee, where he attends. Through the Golden Eagle campaign and banquet, the Osceola District Boy Scouts raised more than $112,000, with 100 percent of the money going to provide programs and services for more than 2,100 Scouts in Osceola County and the more than 50,000 Scouts throughout the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Osceola District Boy Scouts of America is the largest youth organization in the county. The Central Florida Boy Scout Council, of which the Osceola district is a part, is the eighth largest council in the United Stat
