It took four days for Harmony to play its spring game at Mount Dora after thunderstorms Friday caused a delay.
Unfortunately, the results of Tuesday’s game weren’t quite what new Longhorns Coach Jerrad Butler wanted to see as the host Hurricanes posted a 48-21 win.
“It was 7-0, then we gave up a pick-six and it was one of those instances where our (lack of) experience showed up,” Butler said.
Harmony found itself in a 40-7 hole, but the Longhorns fought back in the second half on a pair of Sterling Hicks touchdown passes.
“Some good things happened,” Butler said. “The kids didn’t get down and fought back.”
With about half of his lineup composed of last season’s freshman team, Butler anticipated problems.
“We’ve got some very young kids on defense, and what happens is that those mistakes get amplified like 10-fold,” he said. “It’s a big step for them to adjust to the speed of the varsity game, and a lot of that came into play.”
The Horns defense produced a score when Colton Keene returned a fumble for a touchdown.
There was no live kicking.
Butler is concerned about a knee injury to rising senior offensive lineman Terry Akers, a potential D-I recruit.
Akers was injured early in the game. Butler said Akers will undergo an examination to determine the extent of the injury.
The team lost defensive starter Zach Williams for next season during practice last week.
Butler said “everyone on the bus” got into the game.
“We had a chance to see who can play,” he said. “The outcome wasn’t what we hoped to see, but it’s fine. We saw some good things. I’m excited.”
The Longhorns made the trip to Mount Dora Friday just as thunderstorms struck the area.
“We didn’t take long to call it. They had storm warnings until 11 p.m.” Butler said.
Harmony had graduation Saturday, so the game was scheduled for Tuesday. Because Harmony already had 19 of the maximum 20 spring practices in, the team could not drill over the weekend, Butler said.
“It was OK. We knew we could work on a few things after we got there,” Butler said.
Harmony resumes practice Aug. 8 to prepare for the Kickoff Classic at The First Academy Aug. 26. The team hosts Citrus for the regular season opener Sept. 2.
Harmony moves to 7A District 6 next season with county foes Osceola, St. Cloud, Liberty, Gateway and Celebration.
