At a ceremony in Celebration on May 6, World War II veteran Lionel Roy, who was a Corporal in the 3rd Division, 9th Field Artillery Battalion during the D-Day assault in southern France, was recognized by the French Consulate for his valor on that day and during later fighting.

Roy, a Celebration resident, received the Chevalier of the French Republic's Legion of Honor, the highest decoration given by the French government.
