If you are a teen between the ages of 16 and 19, consider doing something different, challenging and adventurous this summer: Be a volunteer teen docent at Osceola County Historical Society Pioneer Village.
The society is currently recruiting teens who are interested in history to volunteer one regular day of service each week as docents for its museum village in Kissimmee.
As docents, the teens greet and welcome visitors to the village, offer information about the exhibits, give tours of the authentic late-1800s village, and are required on specific days (June 20-24; July 11-15; Aug. 1-5), to serve as youth leaders to campers for the organization’s 2011 Summer Day-Camp program. The volunteers are provided structured training and leadership guidance.
“A summer as a volunteer teen docent at the Historical Society Pioneer Village provides an experience of personal development and growth, including honing communication and workplace skills, and taking initiative toward responsible decision-making and leadership – all essentials applicable to future educational and career endeavors,” Historical Society spokesman Philip Jackson stated in a press release.
Accrued volunteer hours may be applicable toward community service credits under certain educational programs or can be included on a résumé as job experience.
“Visitors to the Pioneer Village come from various states and countries and docents have the fun and fascination of sharing conversations with these travelers – often learning many new things in the process,” Jackson stated. “And there is the rewarding experience of working with other volunteers who are a diverse, friendly and supportive team of dedicated people. Add to this the unusual and beautiful work environment of the 4-acre village setting and, during a teen docent’s summer tenure, he or she will learn many cool things about Florida and Osceola County’s history as well.”
The Osceola County Historical Society, a nonprofit organization, and its Pioneer Village are at 750 N. Bass Road (just off U.S. Highway 192), Kissimmee. Interested teens must go through an interview process for the available positions.
