Assistant Coach Deanna Sphaler, left, applauds as Harmony High School seniors Brittany Bruns (2), Beth Newcott (5), Payton Dering (9) and Taylor Kuwik (11)  pose with the Class 4A state runner-up softball trophy Tuesday at the National Training Center at Clermont.

The Harmony Longhorns dug a hole, then nearly filled it all the way back in Tuesday at the National Training Center.

But, in the final inning of the Class 4A state softball championship game in Clermont, Eau Gallie brought their shovels back out.

Harmony (22-8), which fell behind the Commodores (27-5) 2-0 in the first inning and 3-1 in the third, looked to make Eau Gallie uncomfortable by making it a 3-2 game after back-to-back doubles by Lauren Harris and Brittany Bruns in the sixth inning. But, Eau Gallie used four hits and two errors to get four seventh-inning runs to break the game open and win the 4A state title, 7-2.

The Longhorns were the first girls team from Osceola County to play for a state title since the Osceola reached the 5A softball title game in 1996, and accorded themselves well at the state tournament. Harmony defeated Braden River, 2-1, to get to Tuesday's game.

After falling behind early, the Longhorns chipped into the lead when Bruns led off the second inning with a double then came home when Payton Dering, who was 3-for-5 in two games in Clermont, singled up the middle.
