The Osceola County Veterans Council held its annual awards dinner at the Kissimmee Elks Lodge on Saturday, April 15. The dinner was attended by 190 members of local veterans organizations, community members and a special guest from the Osceola County Council on Aging. Following a performance by the choral group from the Osceola County School of the Arts, a dinner of roast beef and chicken, prepared by the staff of the Elks Club, was served.
The guest speaker was Michael Waldrop, who delivered an informative talk about the situation and problems U.S. troops encounter in Afghanistan.
The following awards were presented by the Veterans Council: Citizen of the Year – Ken Smith; Spirit Award – Memory Gardens Funeral Home; Volunteers of the Year – Wayne and Diane Gomez; Teacher of the Year – Lisa Testa, Osceola County School of the Arts; Administrator of the Year – Frank Telemko, principal of Lakeview Elementary School; Veteran of the Year – Stan Barkley; and Outstanding Veteran of the Year – T.J. Palmer.
A special presentation was made to Dave Conboy, Len Burn, John Fritz and Henry Walczykiewicz, longtime members of the Veterans Council Honor Guard, who are retiring. During the past year, the group conducted 68 funerals/events for a total of 1,715  service hours. The Honor Guard receives no compensation.
A special World War II veteran was introduced at the dinner: Lionel E. Roy, who was notified by the government of France that he was to be presented the French Republic Legion of Honor at a ceremony Friday in Celebration for his outstanding service. Roy is a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient.
