Utility cornerstone dedication ceremony set for Saturday

The Grand Master of Masons of Florida, J. Dick Martinez, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. will dedicate the cornerstone of the Toho Water Authority’s new administrative building at 951 Martin Luther King Blvd., Kissimmee. The ceremony is open to the public.

Two Sunday fires in Kissimmee

The Kissimmee Fire Department responded to two fire calls on Sunday.

Firefighters extinguished a stove fire at the Chelsea Square Condos on Windover Avenue. Firefighters immediately got the flames under control, reporting damage to the vent hood, back wall area, cabinets, countertop and stove. The owner was not at home at the time of the fire. She reportedly left the stove on with a pot that contained cooking oil.

Firefighters also responded to a small brush fire behind a home on Woodland Creek Boulevard. The call came in after 1 a.m. The flames were confined to an area of approximately 10-by-25 feet. Firefighters were able to control the flames within minutes.

Kissimmee imposes uniform speed limit

The Kissimmee City Commission April 19 unanimously approved an ordinance amending the Streets and Sidewalk Code to create a citywide residential speed limit of 25 mph on all local roads.

Over the past few years, the city’s Traffic Calming Committee has received numerous requests for speed studies, police enforcement of the speed limit or the installation of speed tables on neighborhood streets, according to a city press release. The city’s goal is to provide an enforceable and uniform speed limit policy by establishing a uniform maximum speed limit of 25 mph for all residential areas.

On Jan. 4, consultants Kittelson & Associates made a presentation to the City Commission, sharing the findings of a citywide speed limit study. The commission approved the recommendations in the report and staff moved forward with updating the language in the city’s code of ordinance to create the new residential speed limit.

The ordinance is effective immediately. However, the city will conduct an informational campaign and transition enforcement in areas where the speed limit is reduced. This will allow adequate time for residents to become aware of the changes before the strict enforcement of the new speed limit. The installation of the new speed limit signs will be completed by mid-May.
